Red Sweater – I love cardigans!

red sweater cardigan

I love knitting sweaters and I love cardigans more than anything.  I bought this yarn for 97 cents a skein. at Joann’s one day.  Oh what a great find! I bought every ball they had, no matter the color.   Having a ton of the same beautiful red color, I decided I’d make a cool red sweater.

I used about 6 skeins of this bamboo yarn. The pattern was from a Better Homes and Garden publication called Knitted Cold Weather Sweaters.

The pattern I used was designed to be knitted in stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row). But I thought I’d change that up a bit and used a pattern of knit 1, purl 1, across row one and all knit row 2.  I repeated this 2 row pattern and it turned out great.  Because it uses a Red Sweater Ribbing pattern“ribbing” on row 1, the overall sweater has a bit of “hug” to it, yet still drapes nicely and isn’t too tight.

Here’s a little closer photo of the ribbing pattern.  It has a “mistake rib” look to it, meaning the ribbing isn’t pronounced.  I just love how it turned out.   Since it was an easy 2 row repeat, it was easy to stay in pattern as I worked around the pattern elements such as neck line and sleeve bind-offs.

When I got to installing the zipper, I have to hand sew it into place.  I used a sticky seam tape that helped a lot. I tacked the zipper in and then went back and sew the zipper securely  into place.  In the photo, the zipper really stands out and I think that is partially the camera’s fault.  While it is visible, it isn’t bright red and look out of place.  I picked up stitches along the edge of the zipper and worked several rows of stockinette and bound off a nice edge for attaching the zipper.

Just love the way it turned out and is nice and warm!
